Aggie Andrews (1868-1944) |
I had some other posts to share but this was too good to ignore. What if among other last names such as Andrews, Burns, or Farrow that Mama Aggie also went under another family name. And the evidence I have already found just fits about where she was recorded on the US Census as a baby.
In the 1870 US Census she was found in Hinds County, Mississippi with her parents Turner (Surner) and Maria Andrews with her brother Abram. The key fact is that this record was taken near the town of Utica, Mississippi.
And then the same record in Utica where this family were known as Roach this time in the 1880 US Census. How did I find them? I decided to look for who I presume is one of Aggie's kinfolk known as Simon Andrews - who is known as a minister. Found a record of him and just started to look for whatever I can find of Aggie and her family and found a match.
Now we have an interesting wrinkle in our family history. If Turner Roach is the father of Aggie Andrews then we have our first documented veteran of the Civil War. Turner served in the Union Army. Record of his service is shown below.

Oh and from Turner's service record we know that his home county was Madison, MISS. Southwest of Madison is Hinds County. And I presume it wasn't too much of a leap to believe that at some point he left Madison to go in the nearby Hinds County. Here's a map, I underlined important towns in Hinds County where many Hunter/Burns family originated. Perhaps we need to add Madison to the important towns as well you will see Madison in the map north of Jackson, MISS.

Allow me to add that while I haven't found Turner beyond 1880, his wife Mariah had filed for a widow's pension thanks to his Civil War service. The application appears dated for April 1886 and I presume for her to make an application suggests that Turner may have passed away at some point before this.

Somehow in our family history, it has been recorded that our tribal chief's mother is a woman named Aggie Andrews and not Aggie Roach. It's in James Lee Burns' obituary, it's in his brother Turner Burns' social security record - even if it was misspelled. So far these are the only real records we have of Mama Aggie and her headstone.
Hold on, was Turner named for his maternal grandfather? Who can we ask about this?
